Singapore’s haze can come and go, and while we’re used to keeping an eye on the air quality for ourselves, it’s important to remember that our dogs can be affected too!
Every dog is different. Some may happily continue their usual routine, while others may be more sensitive to changes in air quality. So, what should you look out for when the haze rolls in?
Pay Attention to Your Dog
One of the most important things you can do is simply observe your dog.
Keep an eye out for changes such as:
🐾 More coughing or sneezing than usual
🐾 Watery or irritated eyes
🐾 Increased panting
🐾 Faster or heavier breathing
🐾 Lower energy levels
🐾 Reluctance to run or play
🐾 Seeming uncomfortable during outdoor activities
If your dog seems uncomfortable, it’s a good idea to slow things down, give them a break and let them rest.
Dogs with existing respiratory or heart conditions, as well as puppies and senior dogs, may also need a little extra care during periods of poorer air quality.
Does This Mean No Outdoor Fun?
Not necessarily!
Dogs still need opportunities to move, sniff, explore and enjoy their day. When the weather and air quality allow, outdoor activities can continue — but it’s important to be mindful of how your dog is coping.
On hazy days, you can consider:
✨ Keeping outdoor activities shorter or less intense when needed
✨ Offering more water and rest breaks
✨ Watching your dog’s breathing and energy levels
✨ Adjusting activities according to the day’s conditions
✨ Giving your dog plenty of enrichment and downtime
The goal isn’t to stop our dogs from having fun — it’s about being flexible and listening to what they are telling us.
Don’t Forget the Basics!
Whether your dog is heading out for a walk, going to daycare or simply spending time outdoors, make sure they have access to fresh water and opportunities to rest.
After outdoor activities, you can also give their paws and coat a quick wipe to remove any dust or particles they may have picked up.
And of course, keeping an eye on Singapore’s air quality updates can help you decide how much outdoor activity is appropriate for your dog that day.
At Up For Paws, our priority is always keeping our dogs safe while allowing them to enjoy their day!
We continue to monitor the weather and environmental conditions and, where necessary, adjust the intensity or duration of outdoor activities according to the conditions and the dogs in our care.
Our team also keeps an eye on the dogs throughout the day. If a dog appears uncomfortable, overly tired or shows any unusual signs, we make sure they get a break and some downtime!
Ultimately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to haze.
Some dogs may be more sensitive than others, so getting to know your dog’s normal breathing, energy levels and behaviour makes it easier to spot when something isn’t quite right.
If your dog develops persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, unusual weakness or other concerning symptoms, speak to your veterinarian!
